In an era when the Thrissur coastal belt was isolated from modern medical care, Fr. Paul Chittilapilly envisioned a sanctuary of hope. On August 15, 1953, he laid the foundation for a mission that would change the region forever. Two years later, on August 15, 1955, the dream was blessed by Mar George Alappat, Bishop of Trichur. What began as a 10-bed free dispensary and a 25-bed orphanage (Mary Immaculate) was the first of its kind on the coast. Led by the pioneering Dr. Ramani Amma (MBBS) of the esteemed Punnathur family, alongside Sr. Cyril (Nurse) and Sr. Saphrine (Compounder), the mission provided life saving care for snake bites and tropical diseases to a community that had previously been "untouched" by modern medicine.
The year 1967 marked a pivotal turning point. Through the instrumental efforts of the renowned Fr. Joseph Vadakkan, the project caught the attention of "Misereor," a celebrated organization from West Germany. Their substantial support allowed the mission to flourish: The orphanage was moved from the dispensary premises to a beautiful, newly constructed building near St. Mary’s L.P. School. With the remaining funds, Fr. Paul purchased two acres of land, providing the boys of the orphanage a place to cultivate crops teaching them the values of hard work, sustainability, and self-reliance. This era also saw the construction of a two-storied building, housing the region’s first specialized X-ray unit, laboratory, and a residence for doctors, ensuring that high quality medical expertise was always on site. By 1969, the mission had become Fr. Paul’s life's work. He retired from his role as the Vicar of Engandiyoor Church to dedicate himself entirely as the Director of the Orphanage and Hospital. Under his tireless leadership and constant efforts, the humble dispensary officially evolved into the 25-bed Mary Immaculate Mission Hospital. It was no longer just a clinic; it was a cornerstone of the community a place where medicine met mercy.
